Accidents happen — a watch slips into the sink, gets caught in the rain, or takes an unexpected swim. What you do in the next few minutes can make the difference between a saved watch and a ruined one. Here's exactly what to do.
Step 1: Don't Press Any Buttons
Pressing the crown or pushers while the watch is wet can force water deeper into the movement. Leave all controls alone until the watch is dry.
Step 2: Dry the Exterior Immediately
Use a soft, dry cloth to gently pat the outside of the watch dry. Pay attention to the crown and any gaps in the case.
Step 3: Check the Crystal
Look at the inside of the crystal (the glass face). If you see fogging or condensation, water has entered the case and you need professional help immediately.
Step 4: Don't Use Heat
Avoid using a hair dryer or placing the watch in direct sunlight to dry it. Heat can damage seals and the movement.
Step 5: Bring It In
If there's any sign of moisture inside, bring your watch to Watch Battery Express in Sterling, VA as soon as possible. The longer water sits inside a movement, the more damage it causes. We'll inspect it and let you know the best course of action.
Prevention tip: After any battery replacement, have your water resistance tested — opening the case can affect the seal.
